A Poem by John Freeman: ‘The Green Tram’

In my forty sixth 12 months there
are so many issues
I wish to inform you.
How everyone seems to be
drunk at Wimbledon,
and a fox has come to stay in our
backyard. We feed
him duck livers from a can.
In return he doesn’t destroy
the plantings. We are shunned
on the block.

          Oh, there are days when
the darkness falls
too quick and I really feel myself
spinning. And the tram
that runs previous the windbreak
past the home—so comfortable
and comfortable as we strategy winter—
glides by with a terrifying
gentleness.

                        Aglow.
Just a few passengers inside
decked in masks. Bent
into newspapers
as in prayer. A sigh
of wind they usually turn out to be a winking
gentle receding by way of the timber.
I’m wondering if I’ll ever perceive your
incapability to reply me
in these ideas the place
you reside. You inside my life
a green-lit perfection, so loving
and but so soundless I can nearly
deal with you. I consider
you each morning
as I unfold marmalade
on my toast on this unusual
nation a decade later.
