Wow! Fast Old People – BionicOldMan

I’ve been feeling good recently as a result of I’ve been doing nicely in my age group on some native Strava Koms. But earlier than my head will get too massive I assumed I’d put issues in perspective. First of all, these are all flat routes so don’t actually deserve the title “king of the mountains”. King of the flats, or KOFs, perhaps?

Second, I needed to see how my instances examine in opposition to elite athletes in my age group. So I regarded up the instances in nationwide time trials, placed on by the National Senior Games Association within the US, with related teams protecting us getting older athletes challenged all over the world. As of 2019, the 10K report within the 70-74 age group was a time of 14:00 minutes, which is a median of about 26.6 mph. If I work actually onerous at it, I can get my common a bit above 20 mph. That would make me a champion within the 90-94 age group (for which the report is 21:57, or about 17 mph). So to be an elite athlete I’d need to get quite a bit quicker now, or not decelerate any for the following 20 years. I nonetheless really feel fairly good about doing decently in my native space in my age group. But my hat is off to all of the actually quick older women and men on the market.

I believe probably the most astonishing report I got here throughout was 80 yr previous Guiseppe Marioni’s 80-84 hour report. He went 24.24 miles in an hour on a velodrome.

Guiseppi owns Cycles Marinoni in Montreal, Quebec. I’d love to go to Montreal and pay his store a go to.

I’ve competed within the native Bay Area Senior Games prior to now in each the 5K and 10K time trials. So studying up on these information gave me the concept that it could be good to have native 5K and 10K segments on Strava. Most of the native time trial segments are level to level, sadly. It is healthier to have an out and again or loop course so the wind doesn’t think about. So I mapped out a 5K and a 10K route in San Martin, the little city to the south of us. The roads there are ideally suited as a result of they kind a very good grid and are evenly trafficked. Here is the 5K route:

And right here is the 10K. I couldn’t give you a easy loop that was precisely 10K so I did an out and again with a loop for a tail:

I’ll attempt the 5K out on our subsequent sunny day (thursday) and the 10K within the close to future.
